Story
With a length of 133 metres, the five-masted, full-rigged Preußen was the largest of the Flying P-Liners. Flying P-Liner was the name given to sailing ships from the German shipping company F. Laeisz, who were famous for their high speeds. Their names all began with the letter P and included the Pamir and the Passat.

The Preußen was the first and only five-master with full rigging until the commissioning of the Royal Clipper in 2000. A full rig was harder to handle than a barque rig and thus required a specially trained crew. The gain was much higher speeds.

The ship was mainly used on the so-called Salpeter route between Europe and South America and regularly docked at the Chilean Salpeter ports. The Preußen was deemed by many to be the fastest sailing ship of her era and reached top speeds of 18.5 knots. In 1903 she sailed a record voyage to Iquique (Chile) in only 58 days.

In 1910 the Preußen was rammed and damaged when crossing the English Channel by a steamer that was sailing contrary to regulations. The Preußen was towed to Dover as a harbour of refuge, however a storm was brewing and the hawsers were simply not up to towing the gigantic sailing ship and were torn asunder. The Preußen ran aground and broke into pieces a short time after during a storm.
